A professional headshot of a middle-aged man with short, salt-and-pepper hair and brown eyes. He is wearing a light blue button-down shirt and has a friendly, approachable smile. The composition is a close-up portrait with a shallow depth of field, causing the background to be softly blurred into light neutral tones. The lighting is bright and even, highlighting the subject's features clearly.

Your Questions Answered

Everything you need to know about working with me

Starting therapy or coaching is a big decision, and it’s natural to have questions. I want you to feel comfortable and clear on how things work here at Blackwell Counseling & Coaching, so I’ve put together some answers to the things I’m asked most often.

Therapy here isn't just about venting; it’s an active partnership. We’ll talk through what’s happening in your life now, look at how your past might be playing a role, and track your progress toward the goals you’ve set. I often suggest 'homework'—like journaling or trying out new behaviors—to help you take what we talk about in our sessions and apply it to your everyday life.

I am licensed to provide counseling and coaching to clients living in Connecticut, Massachusetts, Rhode Island, and Pennsylvania. We meet via a secure, private video platform, so you can get the support you need right from your own home.

There isn't a 'right' or 'wrong' reason to start. You might be going through a major life change, dealing with anxiety or depression that won't lift, or just feeling stuck in the same old habits. If you feel like things could be better and you're ready for a fresh perspective, that’s usually a good sign that it’s time to reach out.

I see addiction as something that deeply affects the brain's reward system, making it hard to stop even when you want to. Instead of just focusing on the habit itself, we look at the underlying causes. We’ll work together to identify your triggers, find ways to manage impulses, and build healthier ways to cope.

Your privacy is a top priority. Everything we discuss is confidential. I won't share your information with anyone—like a doctor or a lawyer—unless you give me written permission to do so. The only exceptions are when the law requires it, such as if there’s a risk of serious harm to you or someone else.

Before we get started, I’ll need you to fill out a few basics: an intake form to get some background and a form covering my policies on privacy and cancellations. These help us get the paperwork out of the way so we can focus on the work itself.

I do. I have a lot of experience working with attorneys and people in high-pressure careers. We focus on the specific challenges that come with those roles, like burnout, office politics, and the constant pressure to perform, so you can find a way to succeed at work without sacrificing your well-being.

Absolutely. I look at families as a system where everyone affects everyone else. Whether you’re dealing with sibling rivalry, communication gaps between parents and kids, or the fallout from a divorce or loss, we work on practical ways to improve those relationships and bring some peace back to your home.

Being 'solution-focused' means we don't just stay stuck in the problems of the past. While we acknowledge what happened, our main focus is on what you can do right now to change your patterns and move toward the life you actually want to live.

I don't prescribe medication myself, but I believe in doing whatever works best for you. For many people, a combination of therapy and medication is the most effective approach. If you are seeing a doctor or psychiatrist, I’m happy to coordinate with them to make sure we’re all on the same page with your care.
